BMW Charts Alpina's Ultra-Luxury Course with Vision Concept

BMW Charts Alpina's Ultra-Luxury Course with Vision Concept

BMW's recent acquisition of Alpina isn't just a corporate handover. It's a statement. A bold vision for the brand's future just unfolded on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, at the esteemed Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

The "Vision Alpina" concept. Not a mere design exercise, but a blueprint. This shark-nosed 2+2 coupé stretches an imposing 5.2 meters. As long as a Rolls-Royce Wraith, no less. It's a commanding presence. But don't expect to see this exact machine on showroom floors. This concept is an aesthetic declaration. A promise of a new, loftier range positioned squarely above BMW's current top offerings. Yet, it stops short of the stratospheric heights commanded by Rolls-Royce itself. A careful dance.

The Vision Alpina marks the first official peek into BMW's strategy following the full takeover from Bovensiepen earlier this year. The transition is complete. The first actual production car, we hear, will arrive in 2027, built on the formidable BMW 7 Series platform. Deliveries follow in early 2028.

Maximilian Missoni, the BMW design lead for luxury and mid-size, and former Polestar design head, spoke of "utter care" for Alpina's 60-year legacy. The iconic 1978 B7 Turbo, a legend, served as direct inspiration. And you can see it. The multi-spoke wheels. That distinctive wordmarked chin spoiler. Quad-exhaust tips. Hallmarks remain.

Even the Deko Set stripes, a signature, get a modern, minimalist interpretation. More importantly, BMW's push upmarket means these won't be decals anymore. Hand-painted. A detail. But a significant one. Subtle chrome on the “draught surfaces” up front? A respectful nod to the classic BMW 507. Expect that on future Alpinas, which will borrow their core silhouettes from mainline BMW models.

Step inside the Vision Alpina. Another world entirely. Lavalina-grade leather, abundant. Open-pore wood, machined metal details—inspired by high-end watchmaking, BMW says. Inventive ambient lighting. Even crystal glassware, nestled discreetly behind the rear center console. A distinct statement.

"This new level of luxury aims to enable Alpina to compete directly with Mercedes-Maybach and Range Rover, yet offer exclusivity matching that of Ferrari."

That’s the ambition. To take on Mercedes-Maybach and Range Rover head-on. But with a scarce, almost boutique appeal. Ferrari levels of exclusivity. Quite a target.

BMW isn't merely absorbing Alpina; it's relaunching it. As an ultra-luxury sub-brand. A bold move into a fiercely competitive, high-margin territory. The challenge? To justify that exclusivity. To truly differentiate from its own parent company, and indeed, its Rolls-Royce sibling. That's a tightrope walk.
