British Icon Sold: Old Speckled Hen Joins Growing List of UK Beers Under Foreign Ownership

British Icon Sold: Old Speckled Hen Joins Growing List of UK Beers Under Foreign Ownership

Another slice of British brewing heritage has changed hands. Greene King, the venerable pub chain, just offloaded its entire Old Speckled Hen ale brand to Damm, the Spanish conglomerate behind Estrella lager. It's the latest in a relentless procession of UK beer mainstays snapped up by overseas titans.

Barcelona-based Damm isn't just taking a sip; they're buying the whole barrel: original, non-alcoholic, even the golden ale variants. Greene King says it'll continue brewing in Bury St Edmunds for a "handover period." But soon? Production shifts to Damm's own Bedford brewery, opened just last year. A quick move.

Nick Mackenzie, Greene King's chief executive, trotted out the usual corporate line: "delighted to have secured a partner... who will continue to brew the ales in the UK." What did it cost Damm? Both companies remain tight-lipped. No price disclosed. Expect Old Speckled Hen on shelves and in Greene King pubs anyway.

Greene King, for its part, claims this frees them up. They're reportedly pulling back from the broader "off-trade" market to concentrate on pouring their beers strictly within their own pubs and the UK's "on-trade" sector. A strategic pivot. Or perhaps, a tactical retreat.

Old Speckled Hen wasn't always a Greene King asset. They acquired it from Oxfordshire's Morland Brewery in 1999. The beer itself started life in 1979, a commemorative brew for the MG Car Company's half-century move from Oxford to Abingdon. Named after their "owld speckl'd un" – the mottled MG Featherlight Saloon. A charming backstory, certainly.

This sale to Damm isn't an isolated incident. Far from it. The list of once-quintessentially British beers now owned by foreign entities grows longer by the year. Remember 2015? Camden Town Brewery fell to Belgian giant AB InBev (Budweiser, Stella). A deal worth a reported £85 million. That same year, SAB Miller (Peroni, Miller) snatched up London's Meantime Brewing Company. AB InBev later swallowed SAB Miller, too. Then 2019 saw Japanese powerhouse Asahi fork over £250 million for Fuller's entire drinks business, including iconic London Pride. This year, American drinks giant Molson Coors announced the closure of the Cornish brewery making Doom Bar ale. Fifteen years after buying Sharp's Brewery, they called it "no longer financially sustainable." Site closes by year-end.

Molson Coors is also behind Madrí Excepcional, that beer they market as "the soul of Madrid." Never mind it's brewed in Tadcaster, Yorkshire. This geographic sleight-of-hand clearly irks Demetrio Carceller Arce, the billionaire CEO of family-controlled Estrella Damm. He inherited the business. And he wasn't pulling punches in the Sunday Times.

"Madrí is a brand that is created. There is no heritage whatsoever. We have a superior product."

A direct hit. A pointed barb at a competitor's marketing. Interestingly, several popular "Spanish" beers sold in the UK, like San Miguel and Cruzcampo, are actually brewed right here. Northampton and Manchester, respectively.

Luke White, Damm UK's managing director, offered a more diplomatic take on the Old Speckled Hen acquisition. He lauded it as "an iconic British ale brand with a rich heritage and loyal following." He even framed it as a reconnection, stating the brand "reconnects the Damm Eagle Brewery to its historic British beer and ale production roots." Roots, indeed.

So, another "iconic British ale" finds a new home, its heritage now carefully curated by foreign hands. What, then, truly makes a British beer? Its birthplace? Its ownership? Or simply, its enduring taste, no matter who pockets the profits? Questions for the pub, perhaps, over a pint that might, or might not, be as British as it seems.
