Google Workspace's Icon Overhaul: A Fresh Look or Just More Gradients?

Google Workspace's Icon Overhaul: A Fresh Look or Just More Gradients?

You weren't imagining things. Google Workspace apps, the digital backbone for millions, are officially sporting a brand-new aesthetic. Those redesigned icons, initially glimpsed last month, are now appearing widely on screens across the globe. We started noticing the shift just this morning.

Users greeted by the updated icons will spot an immediate change: a gradient effect. They transition from lighter to darker shades, a move that subtly mirrors the Google logo redesign rolled out about a year ago. It's a departure from the flat, uniform tones we've grown accustomed to.

Some icons have shed their rainbow hues for a single, focused color. Think Google Chat, Meet, and Calendar. The intent, presumably, is to help them stand apart. Or perhaps, make them all a bit harder to distinguish from each other at a glance, depending on your perspective.

The Sheets and Slides icons were switched to landscape mode, a subtle nod to how most people actually engage with those applications.

Other mainstays haven’t strayed as far from their original identity. 9to5Google noted that Docs, Sheets, and Slides maintain their core color schemes and general shapes. Yet, even here, a clever adjustment occurred: the Sheets and Slides icons were switched to landscape mode, a subtle nod to how most people actually engage with those applications.

Google Drive received a more noticeable facelift. Its corners are now distinctly rounded, and that familiar spot of red in the bottom right corner? Gone. Certain icons also ditched their borders entirely. Google Keep, for example, is no longer a bulb on a yellow rectangle; it's just a standalone yellow light bulb. As a frequent Keep user, I can attest it will take some getting used to. Still, the new visual is clean. Gmail’s icon, while tidier, remains largely recognizable, avoiding a dramatic transformation.

These changes arrive just days before Google I/O kicks off on Tuesday. The timing feels deliberate. Could Google be preparing to unveil even more visual shifts across its sprawling ecosystem? One has to wonder. The tech giant clearly believes in constant evolution. Users, however, might just need a minute to catch up.
