Silent Threat: Invasive Pest Found at Costco Imperils California’s Vineyards

Northern California’s agricultural heartland faces a quiet, insidious threat. An urgent warning has cascaded from officials: an invasive, plant-killing insect, the glassy-winged sharpshooter, has been discovered on grapevines and citrus plants. Its path? Straight from local Costco stores.

This isn't just any bug. The sharpshooter carries a bacterial disease, Pierce's Disease, capable of laying waste to entire vineyards. A catastrophic potential. Inspectors found the pest across a staggering ten counties, including celebrated regions like Sacramento, Napa, and Solano.

The trail leads back to Burchell Nursery in Fresno County. Shipments of these infected plants reached Costco shelves between April 21 and May 21. For weeks, they sat there.

Sacramento County officials acted fast, destroying 160 grapevines. But the real concern? Hundreds of potentially infested plants, already purchased, are now in customer homes. Unaccounted for. Purchased from Marysville and Sacramento outlets, they represent a ticking biological clock.

The risk extends far beyond wine country. While Pierce’s Disease is a death sentence for grapevines, agricultural commissioner Chrisandra Flores didn’t mince words.

"GWSS can also damage almond, citrus and ornamental plants. The County has been vigilant in preventing this pest from becoming established, to date. It is imperative that the community pull together to help us limit the risk to our local vineyards and agriculture."

Officials are clear. Drastically clear. Residents who bought these grapevines must immediately encase them in two plastic garbage bags, securing them tightly. The goal: prevent any escape. For citrus plants, contact local agriculture departments for inspection. No returns. No transporting. Definitely no tossing them in the regular trash or compost. That could simply spread the plague.

Costco has been contacted for comment. The waiting game begins. Meanwhile, California’s iconic agricultural bounty hangs precariously, threatened by an invisible enemy now dispersed into countless backyards. A stark reminder of how quickly an ecosystem can unravel.
